Title: Guidelines and Standards for Tactile Graphics

This presentation will provide an overview and familiarize individuals with the contents and tactile graphic examples contained in the new Guidelines and Standards for Tactile Graphics that have been compiled and written by the BANA-CBA Joint Tactile Graphics Committee.

These guidelines include sections on: criteria for inclusion of a tactile graphic, design principles, planning and editing, production methods, formats for graphics, mathematics and science, complex diagrams, orientation and mobility, tactile graphics supplements, quality control, graphics for early grades and guidelines for tactile graphics in standardized tests.

This manual provides examples of tactile graphics that illustrate best practices for design, presentation and methods of producing tactile diagrams using a variety of common production methods including collage, vacuum form, microcapsule image, foil and embossed braille image.

The format of the presentation will be an initial overview of how the guidelines were developed and some of the key issues surrounding the production of tactile graphics, as well as the contents of the guidelines themselves.

This overview with the whole group will then be followed by a rotation through three break out groups, led by individual committee members, that will address in more detail, specific sections of the guidelines with tactile examples provided. The smaller break out sessions will be planned and presented in a way to allow participants to examine and discuss topics addressed in individual sections of the guidelines in more detail.
