Take any book, reading passage, science topic or poem and extract vocabulary works specific to a student’s reading level then create activities that are designed for visual or tactile discrimination, rhyming, grammar usage, opposites, word reading practice, alphabetical order, comprehension, mind maps, information organizers, printing, story prediction, and creative display. The whole literacy unit can be created from a template in large print, regular print, regular print with expanded spacing, or Braille format. This template can support the individual academic ability as well as the age or grade of the visually impaired or multiple-handicapped student. Teachers find that the Template is a valuable tool to have in any special education teachers’ toolkit. Students love the built in praise and “signature” rewards.
