After experiencing a traditional style of O&M instruction, the Sergeant Major found the “out of the box” thinking that came from his O&M Specialist, Felicia Echeverria at Junior Blind of America provided him with the skills he needed to live as an independent adult without sight.
Felicia Echeverria’s approach to teaching her students is based on treating the whole person. Her goal is not only to see her students excel in her lessons but to ensure they excel in life. As an instructor teaching skills that are essential to achieving any level of independence and touch all areas of a person’s life, Felicia tailors her instruction to address the needs of each and every student.
Since Orientation and Mobility skills are fundamental and can’t be generalized, Felicia’s classroom knows no boundaries and her instruction often becomes an integral part of a student’s life. Providing her students with specific instruction for daily route travel and covering intimate details of their environment are important to their success. In addition, elements such as, cultural background, cognitive abilities and family involvement play an important role in structuring a student’s instruction.
Together, Sergeant Major Jesse Acosta and Felicia Echeverria, Orientation and Mobility Specialist from Junior Blind of America will show the significant impact flexible and individualized instruction that jumps “out of the box” and out of the textbook can have on the success and independence of individuals who are blind or visually impaired.
